9 map-pack lookups

Why local-pack rank varies by block

Google Maps re-ranks the local pack based on the searcher's coordinates. A business that shows in the top 3 from the office two miles away can be off the pack entirely from a customer standing on the next street over. A single rank number for "your area" hides that — you need a grid to see it.

This free check runs the same 9-point scan our paid tier runs daily for tracked locations. Each cell is a real Google Maps lookup at that specific lat/lon, so the rank you see is what a customer searching from that point would see. Use it once to spot blind spots; upgrade to track them over time.

Frequently asked.

What's a 'grid scan'?
We pick 9 points laid out in a 3×3 grid covering roughly a 1-mile span around the address you give us. At each point we run a fresh Google Maps search for your keyword, exactly the way a person standing there would. Then we look for your business in the local pack and record what rank it landed at — or that it didn't appear. Same primitive our paid local rank tracker uses.
How is the business matched in the results?
We do a case-insensitive name match against the listings Google returns. That works well for most businesses — 'Joe's Plumbing' will match 'Joe's Plumbing & Heating'. If you have a very generic name (e.g. 'City Auto') and there are similarly named businesses in the area, you may see false matches. The paid tier matches by Google place_id, which is exact, after a one-time GBP picker step.
What do the colors mean?
Green is rank 1-3 (top of the local pack), yellow is 4-7, orange is 8-19, and red means you're not in the top results returned for that point. Gray means we couldn't get data for that cell (rare — usually means Google returned an empty result for the query). The same color bands the paid product uses, so you can read the grid the same way.
What does 'avg rank' mean when some cells are blank?
Average rank is computed only across cells where you actually appeared. A business that ranks 1, 2, and 3 in three cells but doesn't show up in the other six has avg_rank=2 and 'cells with data: 3'. Look at both numbers together — a great avg_rank in only 1 cell is much weaker than a decent avg_rank in 9.
Why is this free?
It's a single snapshot for one keyword and one location. The paid tier scans many keywords across many locations on a daily schedule, with diff vs. yesterday, competitor-overlay grids, and historical trend lines. The free check is meant to show you the shape of the problem; the paid product is for actually fixing it over time.
Do you store my address or business name?
The result is cached for 1 hour so you can re-open the page or share the link. The keyword + lat/lon goes into our cross-tenant SERP cache so a popular query warms the cache for everyone (and you might get someone else's free hit if you're checking a common keyword in a common area). We don't sell or share inputs. If you provide an email, we'll send you the report and only follow up if there's something genuinely useful for you.
